Tailwheel Training

Small red and white plane on grassy field surrounded by trees.

Ground Training

Before your first flight, we’ll cover the key fundamentals that set tailwheel flight training apart:

- Handling characteristics of tailwheel aircraft

- Ground handling techniques, including directional control and managing ground loops

- Dynamics of center of gravity and pivot points

- Proper control inputs during taxi, takeoff, and landing, especially during crosswind takeoffs

- Techniques for crosswind and wind correction angles

- Understanding wheel vs. three-point landings — when and why to use each

- Go-arounds, energy management, and visual cues

You’ll grasp the why behind these concepts before we step into the airplane.

In the Airplane

Taxi & Ground Handling

Learn precise control on the ground with essential ground handling techniques — steering, braking, wind correction, and anticipating yaw. Master S-turns for visibility and recover smoothly from developing swerves.

Takeoffs

Refine three-point and wheel takeoffs, focusing on rudder coordination, tail-liftoff timing, and runway discipline. This includes soft- and short-field techniques to enhance your skills.

Landings

Perfect both landing styles with an emphasis on energy management, sight picture, and directional control. Practice bounce recovery and operations on grass or short fields to ensure versatility.

Crosswind Work

Develop instinctive coordination and drift correction through real crosswind takeoffs and landings in varied conditions. This experience is crucial for mastering challenging flying scenarios.

Advanced Handling

Build confidence with slow flight, stalls, slips, and recovery techniques. Emphasis on energy management and go-around decision-making will prepare you for complex situations.

Endorsement Standards

Earn your FAR 61.31(i) Tailwheel Endorsement after demonstrating consistent control and understanding of tailwheel dynamics. Average completion time for this tailwheel flight training is 6–8 flight hours.
